Help Us Keep Muskoka the Muskoka We Love
Can you hear it? The gentle lap of water on sun-warmed rock. The call of a loon across the bay. The scent of pine in the breeze.
This is the Muskoka we love — and it’s at risk once again.
After years of community effort, a new Official Plan for the Township of Muskoka Lakes was adopted to protect our environment, guide responsible development, and preserve the character of our lakeside communities.
Now, a small group of developers is challenging that plan before the Ontario Land Tribunal — trying to undo the policies that have protected Muskoka for decades. The MLA succeeded in having their appeal dismissed — but the developers are back, asking for the decision to be reviewed on technical grounds.
If they succeed, Muskoka’s clean water, natural shorelines, and forests are at risk.
A Broader Threat: Cliff Bay Muskoka
And that's not the only pressing issue. In Muskoka Bay on Lake Muskoka, where the proposed Cliff Bay redevelopment threatens the health and character of the lake, the MLA is working with concerned residents and lake associations to get their message to government officials.
This proposal calls for massive overdevelopment — up to ten six-storey buildings, three hotels, nearly 1,400 units, 80 boat slips, minimal shoreline setbacks – along with two over-the-water restaurants and 31 villas in the lake.
The proposal will be approved by a Ministerial Zoning Order (MZO) to bypass local planning rules — a dangerous precedent that could affect every community in Muskoka.
