Mary Ellen McIntyre

MLA and Friends of Muskoka Endorsed Candidate for Ward A Councillor, Township of Muskoka Lakes

Background and Relevant Experience

Mary Ellen McIntyre is a lawyer currently practicing part time as the Legal Director/Lawyer for a legal clinic. Mary Ellen provides the following explanation of her background and why she is running as a Ward A Councillor in the Township:

“My grandparents built my family cottage the year I was born and it has been my happy place for as long as I remember. During covid I winterized my cottage and returned to Muskoka to live on a permanent basis. After over twenty years of continuing my practice of clinic law in Toronto I have finally returned to Muskoka.  My children were born in Bala!

In terms of education I obtained a B.Sc. and M.Sc. then found my passion with the practice of law. Three days after being called to the bar I boarded the Ontario Northlander to take a job in Moosonee serving the Mushkegowuk, the Cree nations of Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, Kashechewan and Moose Band. After five years I returned to Muskoka where I was hired to establish the Muskoka Legal Clinic.  I worked at the Muskoka Legal Clinic for 10 years. This is now Lakelands Community Legal Clinic and has expanded to serve the Parry Sound District.

Practicing clinic law has allowed me to appear before many Boards, Tribunals and Courts.  I am however most proud of my community development work, a vital part of clinic law.  Community Development means working with a community to identify and address community needs through collaboration between community members, community agencies and often government to bring change to the community to address the community needs.”

Mary Ellen’s Priorities for the Township

Mary Ellen is committed to community and the environment.  She wants her children and grandchildren to “know the Muskoka I grew up in with clean water and communities with neighbours who know each other and work together for informed caring communities.”

Mary Ellen believes short term rentals need to be responsibly managed and by-law enforcement improved in certain areas.   She will work with fellow councillors to find solutions to affordable housing in Bala and beyond.
